Witch Balls have been very popular since the 18th century. For well over three centuries hollow glass spheres have been hung in windows to ward off witch's spells, evil spirits and ill fortune. Hanging these decorative glass balls in the window or outside the front door is thought to tantalize mischievous spirits which may be threatening a home’s tranquillity. The wayward spirit is mesmerized by the ball's reflective beauty. When the spirit touches the sphere it is absorbed and trapped in the glass inside the ball overnight then released in the morning without it’s powers. Glass witch balls are believed to have had their origins in the early seventeenth century, when hollow glass buoys were attached to the edges of fishing nets to keep them afloat. Despite their weight, so long as they were intact, these hollow glass buoys would always float to the surface. Many sailor’s wives hung a glass float in a window of their homes in the hope it would protect their husbands and ensure they returned from the sea unharmed. Spell jars date from the 1600s, witches would bury them outside their front door to repel evil or negative energy. They would fill them with things like hair, urine and blood, however, these days we use nails, crystals, herbs, witches black salt and other secret ingredients… and we keep them beside the door, window or above them as well as buried outside! This safeguarding set consists of a unique vintage, hand blown witches ball and custom made protection spell jar for you and your home.
